Indian Pharmacopoeia


The Official beginning of INDIAN PHARMACOPOEIA was the publication of BENGAL 
DISPENSARY in 1894. The Bengal Pharmacopoeia appeared in 1844. The first official Pharmacopoeia was PHARMACOPOEIA OF INDIA, LONDON which appeared in 1868.It contained drug official in BP (BRITISH PHARMACOPOEIA) in 1864 and some indigenous drugs.

The Indian and colonial addendum ob B.P. appeared as the GOVERNMENT OF INDIA edition in 1901.In 1946, the Government of India issued 'THE INDIAN PHARMACOPOEIAL LIST.Two years later, in 1948 the Government of India appointed 'THE INDIAN PHARMACOPOEIA COMMITTEE'.
  1. First edition of I.P. was IP 1955. The supplement to it IP 55 was publish in 1960.
  2. Second edition published in 1966. The supplement to it appeared in 1975.
  3. Third edition of IP appeared in 1985. It has two volumes with nine appendices.
  4. The addendum 1 was published in1989 and addendum 2 in 1991.
The NATIONAL FORMULATORY OF INDIA (INF) is a pocket sized diary containing formula's appeared in 1960. IPC -INDIAN PHARMACEUTICAL CODEX WAS PUBLISHED IN 1953.

Latest IP is published in 2014 and 2018. Latest IP 2018 contains 220 new monographs. In it, are 170 new chemical monograph, 15 new herbs and herbal products monographs,03 new radio pharmaceutical monographs, 14 new veterinary non - biological monographs, 18 new biological monographs.

There are 3 types of prescription which are as follows : CENTRAL GOVERNMENT HEALTH SCHEME PRESCRIPTION (CGHS)  : These prescription are for those who come under the health scheme of the government. Compounding is the process of extemporaneous preparation of dosage form  on receipt of prescription.Today relatively few prescription involve compounding, but the pharmacists mus still possess the knowledge and skills of compounding that he formerly did so that he can prepare special formulation.The steps of compounding of mediation are as follows :- 1) RECEIVING PRESCRIPTION : Prescription should be received by the pharmacists.Immediately the pharmacists should check patient name, age and whether it is handled by patient in person.While receiving the prescription the pharmacists in no way should facial or verbal expression, express doubts which may shake the faith of the patient in the physician. 2) READING TH PRESCRIPTION : Pharmacists should read the prescription thoroughly in privacy.If necessary, he can consult with another pharmacists or a physician without arousing doubts or fears in the patients mind.
