Globally Recognized Pharmacopoeia's

As we all know pharmacopoeia is a legal and official book issued by a recognized authority usually appointed by concerned government. It is composed of lists of medicinal substances, formulae and their description and standards.

The Important PHARMACOPOEIA Are :-
  1. British Pharmacopoeia. (BP)
  2. United States Pharmacopoeia. (USP)
  3. Indian Pharmacopoeia. (IP)
  4. International Pharmacopoeia. (IP)
Today we are going to learn something about the British Pharmacopoeia (BP) :-

First edition of B.P. appeared in 1864. It is the outcome of London Pharmacopoeia, Edinburgh Pharmacopoeia, and Dublin Pharmacopoeia which appeared in 1618,1699,1807. The second edition in 1867 and fourth in 1898. The Indian addendum has appeared as the government of India edition in 1901.B.P. contains 2663 monographs along with British Pharmacopoeia (Veterinary) 2000.British Pharmaceutical  Codex is an alternative book for formulation of drug which were not well established. Its first edition was published in 1911 and tenth in 1973. The eleven edition onwards is known as THE PHARMACEUTICAL CODEX. British National Formulary is the pocket size handbook containing essential information about drug, action, uses, dosage forms etc.

Types Of Prescription

There are 3 types of prescription which are as follows : CENTRAL GOVERNMENT HEALTH SCHEME PRESCRIPTION (CGHS)  : These prescription are for those who come under the health scheme of the government. The prescription bears common information and a column for pricing. PRIVATE PRESCRIPTION  : Prescriptions are fully charged. These bears the same format as a typical prescription. Compounding is the process of extemporaneous preparation of dosage form  on receipt of prescription.Today relatively few prescription involve compounding, but the pharmacists mus still possess the knowledge and skills of compounding that he formerly did so that he can prepare special formulation.The steps of compounding of mediation are as follows :- 1) RECEIVING PRESCRIPTION : Prescription should be received by the pharmacists.Immediately the pharmacists should check patient name, age and whether it is handled by patient in person.While receiving the prescription the pharmacists in no way should facial or verbal expression, express doubts which may shake the faith of the patient in the physician. 2) READING TH PRESCRIPTION : Pharmacists should read the prescription thoroughly in privacy.If necessary, he can consult with another pharmacists or a physician without arousing doubts or fears in the patients mind.
