Compounding is the process of extemporaneous preparation of dosage form
on receipt of prescription.Today relatively few prescription involve compounding, but the pharmacists mus still possess the knowledge and skills of compounding that he formerly did so that he can prepare special formulation. The steps of compounding of mediation are as follows :-

1) RECEIVING PRESCRIPTION: Prescription should be received by the pharmacists.Immediately the pharmacists should check patient name, age and whether it is handled by patient in person. While receiving the prescription the pharmacists in no way should facial or verbal expression, express doubts which may shake the faith of the patient in the physician.

2) READING TH PRESCRIPTION : Pharmacists should read the prescription thoroughly in privacy. If necessary, he can consult with another pharmacists or a physician without arousing doubts or fears in the patients mind. Pharmacists should maintain PATIENT MEDICAL RECORD (PMR) for an individual patient and he should appropriate entries during each dispensing.

3) CHECKING THE PRESCRIPTION :Before compounding or dispensing the pharmacist must understand the prescription and the intention of the prescriber. The basic rule which should be strictly followed is 'NEVER DISPENSE GUESSWORK'. Secondly, prescription is checked for pharmaceutical quality such as physical, chemical or therapeutic incompatibility in the prescription. As an expert he has to correct it if necessary, after consultation with the prescriber.

4) COMPOUNDING : It is most important part of handling the prescription. One prescription should be compounded at a time with full attention. Filling more than one prescription at a time may lead to crossover of drugs. Some pharmacists first prepare the label and then compound the prescription; it helps to prevent excessive dispensing of dose, but it increases chances of misplacing the label.

5) PRICING THE PRESCRIPTION : Pricing of the prescription must be logical and should cover the cost of ingredients and container, time required for compounding and dispensing, professional services and overhead expenses. In addition to this it should yield net profit.A number of methods are proposed for pricing but in summary it is cost of all the parameters discussed above. The cost of prescription can be calculated as :
PRESCRIPTION PRICE = COST OF INGREDIENT + MINIMUM PROFESSIONAL FEES
The minimum professional fees include profits plus all expenditures other than the cost of ingredients. The cost of ingredients varies from drug to drug.
