Dispensing of medication is defined as the supply of pharmaceutical product to an individual patient, his representative or owner of animal in response to a prescription written by a medical practitioner. 
Patient counselling by the pharmacists is an integral part of dispensing.


According to the product to be dispensed, dispensing of medication is of following types :-

  1. COMPOUNDING AND DISPENSING : It includes the dosage forms which are fully or partly compounded according to the prescription. Such prescription handling involves compounding and dispensing.                                                                                                                     
  2. COUNT - OUT OR POUR - OUT AND DISPENSING : In civil/municipal hospital/primary health center's the common medicines such as expectorant mixtures, or tablets/capsules are purchased in institutional packs.As per the prescribed dose, these dosage forms are measured or counted from bulk container.The prescription handling involves repacking (filling the dispensing pack) and dispensing.                                                                                                               
  3. DISPENSING AS IT IS MANUFACTURED : The modern medicines, dispensed by chemists and druggists in the original pack in which these are manufactured, are the examples of this class.Prescription handling involves only dispensing.Original pack dispensing facilities ease of identification, improved patient compliance, reduced contamination.But ,it reduces flexibility in dispensing small units.                                                                                                         
  4. OTC AND COSMETICS : In the above types consultation with physician before prescription and patient counselling during dispensing are the two main activities involved. Over the Counter (OTC) Medicines and cosmetics may or may not be prescribed by a physician;in such cases its safety to user is of prime importance.The pharmacists should interact with user in professional manner to ascertain the intention of the user and guide him in the selection and uses of the product.This type of counselling is called as PHARMACISTS CONSULTATION.                                                                                                                                                                          
  5. GENERIC DISPENSING : Medicines are manufactured by brand name and also with the title of active ingredients.For example, Crocin Tablet containing paracetamol 500 mg is brand product and Paracetamol tablet I.P. 500 mg is generic product. Generic dispensing is dispensing of products from among the generically equivalent drugs.Pharmacists should accepts the responsibility and practice high moral and ethics to dispense generic products.He must give adequate information to the patients,inform the patient about all generically equivalent products, their strength and costs so that the customer can confidently select a product.
