Pharmaceutical Aids And Necessities - Pharmaceutically Acceptable Glass

The chemistry of glass is extremely complicated. The word "glass" is a generic term referring to vitreous material (material which softens gradually over a temperature range rather than melting sharply). Most commercial glasses are vitreous silicates with some type of additives which confers special properties.Boron decreases the coefficient of expansion in PYREX Glass.Potassium gives a brown light-resistant glass. The rare earths selectively absorb light of certain wavelengths.
Glass may be considered as SODIUM SILICATE (Na4SiO4).
Aqueous solutions may slowly become alkaline upon standing for prolonged times in soft glass containers. It is shown by the reaction given below:
The compendia usually specify the type of glass container if the drug is base-sensitive.The water for injection must be stored in glass of TYPE Ⅰ or as the above reaction is greatly speeded up during heat sterilization. Both the U.S.P and N.F. define the same four glass types and their alkalinity limits.

1)TYPE 1 : The TYPE 1 glass to describe is a a highly resistant Borosilicate glass. It is type of powdered glass which is used for buffered and unbuffered solution.
2)TYPE 2 : The Type 2 Glass is TREATED SODA-LIME GLASS.It is a type of water attack glass.Type 2 glass is used for oleaginous solutions, dry powders and buffered aqueous solution with pH below 7.0
3) TYPE 3 : The TYPE 3 Glass is SODA-LIME Glass which is powdered glass and is used for dry powders and oleaginous solutions.
4) TYPE NP : This type of glass to described is general purpose soda lime glass which is also a powdered type. This type of glass is not for parenterals use.It is used for tablets, ointments, oral solution and external liquids.

Certain drugs must be protected from light. There are numerous types of containers - colourless, opaque and coloured available for packing. The opaque container would be superior light-protective containers, but, except for ointments, clear containers are preferred for dispensing,if for no other reason than that the patient likes to see what he/she is buying, the amount left in the bottle and ease of pouring.

There are four types of clear containers available : Colourless,Green,Blue and Amber.Since most light-catalyzed degradation is due to ultraviolet radiation, this is the area of electromagnetic spectrum that must be excluded. For the most part Blue glass does not confer much protection.Green glass may or may not, depending upon the type and intensity of green.Amber glass will usually screen-out ultraviolet radiation very effectively and is usually the colour recommended for protection from light. Both U.S.P and N.F. have identical standard for percent transmission of light in 290 to 450 nm region, dependent upon the thickness of the glass. It is assumed that radiation below 290 has been screened out by atmosphere.

Compounding And Dispensing In Pharmacy

Dispensing in pharmacy is the branch of pharmacy which is concerned with compounding and distribution of medicament's.It involves reading of prescription, checking the prescription, packing, labelling, and dispensing pharmaceutical products. Thus dispensing pharmacy mainly works in two fields, compounding and dispensing. COMPOUNDING : Compounding is extemporaneous preparation of a pharmaceutical products according to formula prescribed in the prescription or in the pharmacopoeia. The pharmacist evaluate the formulation for incompatibility, toxicity and stability in the final container. DISPENSING : Dispensing is defined as the supply of pharmaceutical products to an individual patient ,his representatives or an owner of an animal in response to prescription written by a medical practitioner. The products dispensed to the patients may be compounded in pharmacy in quantity written in prescription.Patients counselling is integral part of dispensing. MANUFACTURING :   Manufacturing is...

Pharmaceutical Aids And Necessities - Acids And Bases

This Blog shows discussion of several topics important to the preparation, preservation and storage of pharmaceutical products. The major topics include ACIDS and BASES - frequently employed in the conversion of drugs to chemical forms convenient to their product formulation;BUFFERS - used to maintain the pH of various formulations within Prescribed Limits .

Types Of Prescription

There are 3 types of prescription which are as follows : CENTRAL GOVERNMENT HEALTH SCHEME PRESCRIPTION (CGHS)  : These prescription are for those who come under the health scheme of the government. These are not charged but levy charges may be taken. After Dispensing the medicines, prescription are sent to the account section for pricing. The prescription bears common information and a column for pricing. PRIVATE PRESCRIPTION  : Prescriptions are fully charged. These bears the same format as a typical prescription. Except drugs of controlled class, these prescriptions are returned to the patients. HOSPITAL PHARMACY : These include Two types  IN - PATIENT PRESCRIPTION : Prescription for in-patient are written on the physician's order form. The physician order forms are prepared in multiple copies for utilization in the pharmacy,in the nursing station and to attach to the patient medication record. The prescription bears information regarding hospital name, ward nu...

Compounding Of Medication

Compounding is the process of extemporaneous preparation of dosage form  on receipt of prescription.Today relatively few prescription involve compounding, but the pharmacists mus still possess the knowledge and skills of compounding that he formerly did so that he can prepare special formulation. The steps of compounding of mediation are as follows :- 1) RECEIVING PRESCRIPTION : Prescription should be received by the pharmacists.Immediately the pharmacists should check patient name, age and whether it is handled by patient in person. While receiving the prescription the pharmacists in no way should facial or verbal expression, express doubts which may shake the faith of the patient in the physician. 2) READING TH PRESCRIPTION : Pharmacists should read the prescription thoroughly in privacy. If necessary, he can consult with another pharmacists or a physician without arousing doubts or fears in the patients mind. Pharmacists should maintain PATIENT MEDICAL RECORD (PMR) ...
